About forty-five hundred years ago, not long after the completion of the Great Pyramid at Giza, a seed of Pinus longaeva , the Great Basin bristlecone pine, landed on a steep slope in what are now known as the White Mountains, in eastern California. The seed may have travelled there on a gust of wind, its flight aided by a winglike attachment to the nut. This seed, however, lay undisturbed. On a moist day in fall, or in the wake of melting snows in spring, a seedling appeared above ground—a stubby one-inch stem with a tuft of bright-green shoots. Most seedlings die within a year; the mortality rate is more than ninety-nine per cent. The survivors are sometimes seen growing in the shadow of a fallen tree. The landscape of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, as this area of the White Mountains is called, is littered with fragments of dead trees—trunks, limbs, roots, and smaller chunks. Pinus longaeva grows exclusively in subalpine regions of the Great Basin, which stretches from the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada to the Wasatch Range, in Utah. Conditions are generally too arid for the dead wood to rot; instead, it erodes, sanded down like rock. The remnants may harbor nutrients and fungi that help new trees grow.

The study and dating of tree rings is called dendrochronology. Dendrochronologists are scientists who study tree rings to answer questions regarding the natural world and the place of humans in the world. There are many practical applications of the study of tree rings. Dendrochronology is considered an interdisciplinary science and its techniques and theory can be applied to various applications. Dendrochronolgists do not simply count a tree’s rings as it does not ensure accurate dating.
There are actually many techniques used to date wood samples accurately. One such dating method is known as the skeleton plot. The skeleton plot is one of the most commonly used method for crossdating tree rings. Rings are studied by making a horizontal cross section cut through the trunk of a tree. The rings are visible due to changes in growth speed throughout the different seasons. Generally this means that one ring marks one year, though for accurate dating, tree rings must actually be studied further.
Dendrochronologists study timber core samples and measure the width of the growth rings. When scientists study samples from different sites within a particular area, they can build a comprehensive historical sequence.
The Past and the Future of the Earth’s Oldest Trees
Students from across Canada are invited to be a part of the Trans-Canadian Research and Environmental Education TREE project: a national research program to study the environmental history of their own community. The MAD Lab studying tree growth and the CLS studying chemistry are able to look at tree cores, specifically the chemistry of the rings, and connect that information to a timeline of environmental events of the community.
Students will learn about the life and nutrient cycles of trees, apply that knowledge to decipher information about the environment captured in tree rings, and the nutrients in soil by working through modules and activities designed to engage students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM , and social studies with Indigenous perspectives.
