A Guide to Dendrochronology

A Guide to Dendrochronology

About forty-five hundred years ago, not long after the completion of the Great Pyramid at Giza, a seed of Pinus longaeva , the Great Basin bristlecone pine, landed on a steep slope in what are now known as the White Mountains, in eastern California. The seed may have travelled there on a gust of wind, its flight aided by a winglike attachment to the nut. This seed, however, lay undisturbed. On a moist day in fall, or in the wake of melting snows in spring, a seedling appeared above ground—a stubby one-inch stem with a tuft of bright-green shoots. Most seedlings die within a year; the mortality rate is more than ninety-nine per cent. The survivors are sometimes seen growing in the shadow of a fallen tree. The landscape of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, as this area of the White Mountains is called, is littered with fragments of dead trees—trunks, limbs, roots, and smaller chunks. Pinus longaeva grows exclusively in subalpine regions of the Great Basin, which stretches from the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada to the Wasatch Range, in Utah. Conditions are generally too arid for the dead wood to rot; instead, it erodes, sanded down like rock. The remnants may harbor nutrients and fungi that help new trees grow.

The dataset presented here was collected by the GenTree project EU-Horizon , which aims to improve the use of forest genetic resources across Europe by better understanding how trees adapt to their local environment.

This dataset of individual tree-core characteristics including ring-width series and whole-core wood density was collected for seven ecologically and economically important European tree species: silver birch Betula pendula , European beech Fagus sylvatica , Norway spruce Picea abies , European black poplar Populus nigra , maritime pine Pinus pinaster , Scots pine Pinus sylvestris , and sessile oak Quercus petraea.

Lab-Aids® Dendrochronology Classroom Kit

By using specially designed simulated tree cores, students develop a basic knowledge of the principle of tree ring dating. Students will also discover the important effects of the climate on living things as they unravel secrets about the age and history of trees through core samples. Lab activities allow students to determine the age of trees, compare wet and dry years relating them to chronological events in their own lives, attempt to establish the year when a piece of lumber was cut and when it started growing, and develop a better understanding of the tree-ring dating principles.

The study and dating of tree rings is called dendrochronology. Dendrochronologists are scientists who study tree rings to answer questions regarding the natural world and the place of humans in the world. There are many practical applications of the study of tree rings. Dendrochronology is considered an interdisciplinary science and its techniques and theory can be applied to various applications. Dendrochronolgists do not simply count a tree’s rings as it does not ensure accurate dating.

There are actually many techniques used to date wood samples accurately. One such dating method is known as the skeleton plot. The skeleton plot is one of the most commonly used method for crossdating tree rings. Rings are studied by making a horizontal cross section cut through the trunk of a tree. The rings are visible due to changes in growth speed throughout the different seasons. Generally this means that one ring marks one year, though for accurate dating, tree rings must actually be studied further.

Dendrochronologists study timber core samples and measure the width of the growth rings. When scientists study samples from different sites within a particular area, they can build a comprehensive historical sequence.

Students from across Canada are invited to be a part of the Trans-Canadian Research and Environmental Education TREE project: a national research program to study the environmental history of their own community. The MAD Lab studying tree growth and the CLS studying chemistry are able to look at tree cores, specifically the chemistry of the rings, and connect that information to a timeline of environmental events of the community.

Students will learn about the life and nutrient cycles of trees, apply that knowledge to decipher information about the environment captured in tree rings, and the nutrients in soil by working through modules and activities designed to engage students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM , and social studies with Indigenous perspectives. See below for more information on curricular connections.

Tree-rings are an important tool for the investigation of paleoclimatic records for regions or periods of time with no instrumental climatic data. However, the responses of different species and sites to various climatic parameters are unusual. In the present study, we developed tree-ring-width chronologies of Cedrus deodara from three different sites of Chitral Hindukush range of Pakistan. The study was conducted to understand tree-growth climate relationship and its applicability in proxy climate investigations.

The chronologies covered the past to years, with a mean segment length MSL ranging from to years.
