But are they a good thing? Jo Eckersley investigates. But these people are the exception, not the rule. The fact is that, for many people, contracting an STI becomes a life-changing event; not because of the infection, but because of the stigma. This gender disparity probably reflects the lower rate of diagnosis for women back in , but the numbers certainly demonstrate that the last decade has seen a massive increase in women dealing with STIs.
Research also suggests women can be unduly influenced by stigma. In a Canadian cross-organisational study found that women were affected by female-specific moral stigma, which had more of an impact on their states of mind than judgement by others and self-judgement. The shame can be debilitating for all genders; studies have found young people are less likely to get tested when they identify sexually transmitted infections with stigma.
A study by the University of Michigan found that people were more afraid of contracting Chlamydia, a treatable infection, than flu, which can be deadly. Sexually transmitted infections can be transient, or they can last a lifetime. A few years ago, back when I was regularly trolling OKCupid for dates, I received a message from a potential paramour. He’d been scanning through the survey answers associated with my profile, and one response in particular gave him pause: when asked whether I’d consider dating someone with herpes, I’d responded no. It wasn’t some carefully considered stance on sexual transmitted infections, or grand statement about herpes.
For him, however, it was a potential deal breaker: As you’ve probably figured out by now, my suitor was a member of that vast group of sexually active adults who’ve been infected with herpes.
Dating apps and sexual health stigma are adding to more than a million new STD infections every day and driving a surge of untreatable superbug strains, the World Health Organisation has warned. There are million diagnoses a year of treatable STDs like chlamydia , gonorrhoea , syphilis and trichomoniasis among people under the age of 50, according to WHO figures. Roughly one in 25 people, globally, is infected with one or more of these diseases and every time antibiotics are used to treat them it increases the chances of drug resistance emerging.
They are also a major cause of infertility, chronic disease and birth complications and syphilis alone caused , stillbirths and newborn deaths in Reducing this will require measures to tackle stigma about the use of contraception and sexual health testing, but the changing nature of relationships and the influence of new technology may also be a factor. There is also the issue of a lack of access to testing services which mean many people may go undiagnosed for years until they show symptoms.
The WHO has issued a call to arms researchers to develop a pregnancy-test style system for diagnosing STDs cheaply in countries without national testing programmes. Gonorrhoea diagnoses jumped 26 per cent in England last year and there were three extensively drug resistant cases in However the UK government has cut budgets for sexual health services repeatedly since , and the WHO said these kinds of decisions should be reversed.
We have now had three cases in the UK of gonorrhoea not treatable by standard antibiotics. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here.
